The service will enable our organization to take extra measures to protect your personal information, such as social security, driver’s license, credit card, and account numbers, from undesirable external parties on the internet.
Beginning January 12, 2011, enhanced electronic communications containing confidential information will be available to you. You will be able to receive and reply to Belvoir Federal’s encrypted email easily.
If you are not a current ZixCorp email encryption customer then you may receive secure e-mail via the following methods:

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What is Email Encryption?
Email Encryption is the process of transforming the content of emails using an algorithm (called a cipher) to make it unreadable to anyone except those with the ability to decrypt it, usually with a “key.”
Why do you need to encrypt email?
With the development of federal laws like the Gramm-Leach Bliley Act and recent state privacy laws, it is important that all communications containing personally-identifiable financial and health information be encrypted. To help implement these important and practical security measures, we are using email encryption to protect our email communications.
What kinds of information will be encrypted?
Our email encryption service will encrypt email that contains personal sensitive information such as:
- Personal information (such as social security numbers)
- Financial information (such as account and credit card numbers)
How is personal financial information identified?
The content of all outbound messages is scanned and compared against three lexicons, or dictionaries. Email Messages containing financial identifiers (Social Security numbers and account numbers) AND financial terms (balance transfer, refinance, etc.) OR Credit card numbers are automatically encrypted.
How will I get my encrypted messages?
When an employee sends you an email containing private information, then you may receive and encrypted message via the following methods::
- ZixPORT You will be asked to click on a link in the email, which will connect you to our secure message center. There you will register a private password to retrieve and reply to your secure messages.
- ZixDIRECT You will receive your encrypted messages directly in your inbox, as secured attachments. When you double-click the attachment, you will create a private password to read and reply to your secure message.
What if I already use Zix Email Encryption?
If you already use Zix then you are already part of the ZixDirectory, and will automatically receive secure emails in your inbox and be able to send secure emails back to us transparently.
How do I send a Secure Message?
If lexicon policies are used exclusively, the encryption process happens transparently without requiring any user input. If you are using ZixMail for point-to-point secure email delivery click the ZixMail button in your regular email toolbar to encrypt the message.
Your organization may have also set up a special keyword encryption policy. In this case, type the specific keyword (e.g. secure or confidential) in the Subject Line of your message and the content is automatically encrypted once it is sent. Contact your secure email administrator to confirm your company’s specific keyword and its usage (e.g. keyword may need to be located at the beginning or at the end of the Subject Line).
How does the recipient open the message?
If the recipient (or his/her company) is a ZixCorp customer, they receive the email directly in their email inbox, just like any other email.
If they are not a ZixCorp customer, then recipients will receive an encrypted email that they will be able to easily open.
Won’t it be difficult to get my messages?
You will be able to open your encrypted emails in seconds with the confidence that your personal information remains private. Together with our partners at ZixCorp™, we have developed an easy-to-use approach that protects our entire community of interest — our employees, our customers, and our business partners.
A private conversation and can be easily intercepted and read by unwanted parties. By law we are required to protect certain types of personal information but more importantly we believe it is simply a smarter way to do business. In addition email encryption increases efficiencies by allowing the electronic transfer of sensitive information that has traditionally required slower manual delivery methods. Email encryption is one way we’re taking responsibility to protect your personal private information.
